Sholem Aleichem was the pen name of Solomon Naumovich [ben Nachum] Rabinovich, a leading Yiddish author and playwright. The musical Fiddler on the Roof, based on his stories about Tevye the Milkman, was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe.

Volume three of the six volume best Russian edition of 'Sobranie sochinenii' (1971-1974) includes a cycle of Sholem-Aleichem´s best short stories, 'Zheleznodorozhnye rasskazy' or 'Zapiski kommivoiazhera', short stories for children and short stories not included in any cycle.
