Memoir by NKVD guerilla operative, Hero of the Soviet Union. In 1920s the author was a young officer at Razvedupr (military intelligence). Illegal in Poland, Finland and Sweden in 1930s.Took active part in NKVD´'Death Squads' operations during Spanish Civil War against POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista) members. The writer George Orwell served with the party and witnessed what he called the Stalinist repression of the movement, which would form his anti-authoritarian ideas in later life.

Guerilla operative in Belarus during WW II. Major KGB operative in Lithuania in 1946 - 1954 and a commander of one of the KGB 'Death Squads'. 'Sleeping agent' and KGB reserve officer in 1960s and close associate of P. K. Ponomareno.

Ponomarenko during World War II, led guerrilla units within Nazi - occupied Belarus from his Headquarters in Moscow. He clashed with the Polish underground and gave orders for his troops to disarm them and execute the officers. In this aspect the forces under Ponomarenko's command initiated a limited cooperation with the Nazi occupation forces informing on members of the Polish underground.
