The novel was written by Ivan Shmelev in Crimea in 1919 and published in Simferopol the same year. Shmelev left Russia for good in 1922 from Moscow. Pencil inscription on a flyleaf byNils Bergstrand, a distinguished Swedish Slavist and translator: 'Nils Bergstrand Stockholm 1921 Fr. 7.50'. Pencil note on title page with Bergstrand´s address in Stockholm in 1921. Numerous detailed notes through the text in Bergstrand´s neat handwritting in pencil through the entire text of the book.
