A beautiful association copy.

A mystical novel about love of a serf icon painter to his mistress. The novel was written by Ivan Shmelev in Crimea in 1919 and published in Simferopol the same year. Shmelev left Russia for good in 1922 from Moscow. Pencil inscription on a flyleaf byNils Bergstrand, a distinguished Swedish Slavist and translator: 'Nils Bergstrand Stockholm 1921 Fr. 7.50'. Pencil note on title page with Bergstrand´s address in Stockholm in 1921. Numerous detailed notes through the text in Bergstrand´s neat handwritting in pencil through the entire text of the book. Berstrand´s working copy for a Swedish translation of the book.
